Living Bomb “Best Spell Ever” in 3.2

by laz on Jul.05, 2009, under Public Test Realm[ 3.2 ]

Kaboom

So it’s official [Living Bomb] is now the best spell ever (at least in 3.2), and why you may ask? Because now you can cast  it on more than one target at a time, though they have not yet updated the tooltip to reflect this yet.  Bear in mind this is only on the Public Test Realm and may never see the light of day. Personally I can’t see why it wouldn’t (though being a mage myself might be cause for bias).

Anyway something else occurred to me while I was reading though patch notes for 3.2. Remember we talked about the changes to Empowered Fire!

[Empowered Fire]: In addition to its existing effects, this talent now also grants a 33/67/100% chance to regain 2% of base mana each time the [Ignite] talent deals damage.

Now let’s put this together with the new mage_glyph [Glyph of Living Bomb] which gives our Living Bomb tics a chance to crit and proc ignite which in turn would trigger the new Empowered Fire talent granting us mana back.  Now I’m not sure how well this is going to work but considering that you can put living bomb on multiple targets now and each tic on every target has a chance to crit and ignite this could be very interesting.

Tier 9 Mage Set

T9 Mage Set

Today Blizzard unveiled the tier 9 set for mages. I can hardly contain my surprise at the stark use of the color purple and neon lighting. I guess if you have to paint a target it might as well glow in the dark huh? But in all seriousness I think I was more disappointed that the mage set is just a clone of the priest and warlock sets with *ahem* more purple. This also reminds me of a great youtube video :)

Mage Q & A with Ghostcrawler

by laz on Jul.02, 2009, under News

Read the Full Q & A Post

So I was pursuing the warcraft forums late and I came across the Q & A interview with Ghostcrawler talking about the current state of the mage in Wrath, I have to say I was more or less disappointed with the answers given and in some cases more than a bit pissed off at the almost reflex GM response “delete your UI and re-roll a warlock” answers. You can read the full article on the warcraft forums here if you like but I’m going to cherry-pick a few specific statements by Ghostcrawler to comment on.
We used to call the mage the master of AoE damage, but we’ve since decided that’s not a great niche for anyone. The “AoE class” feels mandatory in situations where you do have large crowds of enemies to contend with, but then the AoE class gets bored when everyone else is maximizing their single-target damage on a boss. Now we try and give AoE tools to all damage-dealing specializations (specs), though we will always make extra effort to make sure mages stay good in that department.
How one man can use so many words to say so little is amazing. Lets look at this statement shall we, first he says we use to be called the Master of AoE damage, then he goes on to say “that’s not a great niche”. A scant sentence latter we have “Now we try and give AoE tools to all damage-dealing specializations (specs), though we always make extra effort to make sure mages stay good in that department”. So he admits its not a good idea but then goes on to say were promoting it anyway because that’s what mages do baby, we AoE shit!
